MSc Neuroscience Graduate

I am Rafael Pitsillos and l have graduated from medical school at the University of Patras in Greece, 2024. I then completed my MSc studies in Neuroscience at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics in 2025. Throughout this program, I developed a solid foundation in neuroscience, exploring the field from the microscopic level -including cellular and molecular mechanisms -to broader concepts such as neural circuits, behavior, and the clinical manifestations of neurological disorders.

During my studies, I had the opportunity to observe multiple neuroscience laboratories, which helped me refine my teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. My thesis project, conducted in the Neurophysiology and Bioinformatics Department, focused on Neuroinformatics and Computational Neuroscience, where I evaluated MRI volumetric analysis pipelines for dementia research. This experience strengthened my analytical mindset and deepened my expertise in neuroimaging and neurodegeneration.

My main goal is to bridge neuroscience and clinical practice - combining research and patient care to better understand and treat neurological diseases. Interestingly, I originally entered the MSc program with a different kind of interest, but through the courses and lab experiences, I found myself drawn into computational neuroscience and neuroinformatics, a direction I had never expected. While pursuing my MSc studies, I began working as a Research Assistant on a Multiple Sclerosis project at the University of Cyprus. After finishing my degree, I started my journey as a Bioinformatics Scientist at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics (CING) and Genetics, contributing to META-BRAIN project, working on non-invasive neuromodulation for neurological diseases. These experiences allowed me to apply the knowledge and skills I gained during my studies to real-world neuroscience research.

To new students entering the program, my advice would be this: stay curious and open-minded. You may start with one interest in mind, but be ready to explore unexpected paths. The more you engage, the more meaningful and rewarding your journey will become!!
