The Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics has established the 1st Chair of Bioinformatics in Cyprus through a European H2020 ERA Chair grant (BIORISE, 2015-2020). The establishment of the Bioinformatics ERA Chair has attracted talented scientists in the modern fields of informatics in medicine and biology. The new Bioinformatics Group has started working in collaboration with all CING Departments and Clinics in order to satisfy urgent needs for cutting edge computational analyses on a wealth of biomedical data, thus enhancing both the early diagnosis for a large range of diseases and the targeted drug discovery.
Our research is focusing on Computational Diagnostics and Therapeutics inside the fields of Systems Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics. We are exploiting network-based bioinformatics methodologies along the axis of translational research to develop tailor-made applications of computer aided diagnosis and risk estimation regarding diseases of interest at CING. We are utilizing any kind of biomedical data available (from omics to imaging and other clinical data) to reconstruct and analyze multi-layered networks towards integromics and personalized medicine. We are developing computational methods and pipelines to simulate, virtually screen, filter and evaluate various therapeutic approaches expanding from gene therapy to bioactive compounds, drug discovery and drug repurposing/repositioning.
