PhD Molecular Medicine

CING became more than just a place of study - it was a transformative community that strengthened my scientific foundations and supported my growth into the researcher I am today. Having completed my BSc in Biology and my MSc in Molecular Basis of Human Disease at the University of Crete in Greece, I joined CING in 2012 to pursue my PhD studies. My PhD thesis was conducted at the Biochemical Genetics Department of CING and was focused on the investigation of the process of glycogen transport to lysosomes through the study of Stbd1, a proposed selective autophagy receptor for glycogen. After completing my studies, I was fortunate to continue my journey at CING as a member of staff, allowing me to stay connected to the community and apply what I had learned in a professional research setting. Since 2022, I work as an Associate Scientist in the Biochemical Genetics Department at CING where I am mainly involved in the research activities of the Department and also in diagnostic services related to inborn errors of metabolism. I am also an Academic Staff at CING where I am involved in teaching activities and supervision of post-graduate students. The challenging, yet supportive and inspirational environment at CING helped me build a strong scientific foundation and develop a clear and focused approach to research. The mentorship, collaborative spirit and access to cutting-edge research shaped not only my scientific path but also my confidence in contributing meaningfully to the scientific community. To new students joining CING: remember that the path of research is not easy and success often comes after many unsuccessful attempts. Be patient, stay committed and curious and most importantly, love what you do. With dedication and passion, every challenge becomes a step towards growth and invaluable learning experiences.
