Emilia Athanasiou
MSc Medical Genetics Graduate
My name is Emilia Athanasiou, and I am a paediatrician with a special interest in rare genetic disorders. In 2022, I began my part-time Master of Science programme in Medical Genetics at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING). I completed the programme in 2024, presenting my thesis on “Variable Expressivity and Incomplete Penetrance of Variations within Susceptibility Loci: Focusing on the Example of 15q13.3”, under the guidance of my library project advisors, Dr. Ludmila Kousoulidou and Dr. Carolina Sismani, at the Cytogenetics and Genomics Department of the CING.
Throughout my two years at the CING, I gained valuable knowledge about the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying genetic diseases, as well as hands-on experience in genetic testing methodologies and data interpretation. This experience deepened my understanding of how genetic variation influences disease presentation and patient outcomes.
In June 2025, I achieved the European Certificate in Medical Genetics and Genomics (ECMGG) from the UEMS-SMG (European Union of Medical Specialists- Section of Medical Genetics).
In my current work as a paediatrician at the Genetics Clinic of Makarios Hospital, the skills and insights I acquired through the MSc programme have proven invaluable. I am now better qualified to evaluate patients with rare genetic conditions, interpret genetic results and provide accurate counselling to families. The CING not only enhanced my scientific knowledge but also strengthened my critical thinking, diagnostic reasoning and appreciation for the importance of precision medicine in Paediatrics.
To those beginning their journey at CING, I would encourage you to be curious, proactive, and open to interdisciplinary learning. Engage closely with your mentors, take part in research activities, and do not hesitate to ask questions.
