MSc Medical Genetics Graduate

I am Ioanna Charalampous a 2023 graduate of the CING where I followed the MSc program of Medical Genetics. My time at the CING was a defining chapter in my academic and professional journey, one that deepened my fascination with biology and genetics and strengthened my commitment to the field. I did my research project studying a rare case of Prader-Willi syndrome caused by a balanced translocation and how the translocation event might have influenced gene expression and methylation in the genomic area of interest, leading to the presentation of the Prader-Willi phenotype. The hosting department of cytogenetics and genomics ensured that I was involved in every part of my research project, from its initial organisation and planning to the final stages of experimentation and analysis, which allowed me to get an insight into the research world and helped me gain confidence and independence in the laboratory environment. In addition to the invaluable experience I gained during my research project, my time at the CING gave me the opportunity to learn in a dynamic environment where research and patient care intersect, helping me to discover which career paths truly inspire me and giving me the foundation to pursue and achieve my goals.   

I am currently working as a laboratory technologist involved in the wet lab and result interpretation of whole exome and whole genome sequencing while also teaching biology to high school students which allows me to share my enthusiasm for biology with the next generation of learners. 

For any current students starting their journey at the CING, I would like to encourage you to embrace every opportunity the CING has to offer. As a recognised centre of excellence, it can help students learn while appreciating how biomedical research translates into the clinical setting and be inspired by experts in the field. Stay curious, ask questions, and seek out hands-on experiences.
