Clinical Genetics and Genomics Department

The Department of Clinical Genetics and Genomics serves as a leading reference center for the entire island, providing specialized diagnostic and genetic counselling services to patients and their families affected by genetic conditions. Currently, our team consists of a consultant clinical geneticist, three genetic counsellors, a clinical secretary, an associate scientist, a PhD candidate, and other postgraduate students engaged in various research projects.

We prioritize a patient-centered approach and collaborate closely with both national and international colleagues who specialize in genetics and other medical or scientific fields. Our department is dedicated to investigating the genetic aetiology and prevalence of genetic disorders in Cyprus. Research initiatives, often in collaboration with other departments within CING, utilize conventional and next-generation sequencing techniques to identify the genetic factors underlying a wide range of genetic disorders. These include rare syndromic and non-syndromic intellectual disabilities, neurodevelopmental disorders, congenital malformations, ocular anomalies, skeletal dysplasias, genodermatoses, and other rare genetic conditions.

Additionally, our department is a full member of the European Reference Network for Rare Malformation Syndromes, Intellectual and Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ERN-ITHACA), where we serve as the designated expert center for Cyprus. ERN-ITHACA provides a collaborative infrastructure for the diagnosis, evidence-based management, and data collection of patients with rare disorders. The network's objectives also include the establishment of pan-European patient registries and the promotion of research collaborations, both of which our department actively participates in, thereby enhancing our international networking efforts.
