Clinical Genetics & Genomics Department

Clinical Genetics is the service offered to individuals affected by or who may be at risk for a genetic condition, aiming towards the best possible quality of life and reproductive options.

The Clinical Genetics Clinic in Cyprus was founded in 1994 by Dr. Violetta Christophidou-Anastasiadou. Currently, the Clinical Genetics team at CING consists of a clinical geneticist, two genetic counsellors, a post-doctoral fellow, a laboratory scientific officer and other young scientists working on research projects. It operates in close collaboration with the Clinical Genetics Clinic based at the Archbishop Makarios III hospital.

The Clinic offers diagnosis, management and counselling on the whole spectrum of genetic disease. Several research projects are also carried out in collaboration with other departments at CING and other hospitals or clinics. We are currently in the process of constructing an electronic registry at a national level, called ‘CENSUS’, recording patients with congenital malformations.

In 2016, the Clinical Genetics Clinic became an official member of the European Reference Network, ERN-ITHACA, as the designated expert centre in Cyprus for rare congenital malformations and rare intellectual disability disorders. This ERN brings together experts from 15 European countries and aims to provide an infrastructure for diagnosis, evidence-based management and research collaborations across European borders.
