EU-Europe Aid Project UICC Cancer Declaration
Total duration of the action 28 months
Objectives of the action
The overall objectives of the action are to contribute to a more effective management of the Turkish Cypriot (T/C) cancer patients, and to help reduce the incidence of familial cancer in the T/C population. The first specific objective of the action is to increase the access of T/C patients to clinical oncology and cancer genetics services available in the Republic of Cyprus through a bicommunal initiative. The second objective of the action is to bolster this bicommunal initiative by parallel efforts aimed at creating and increasing public awareness in both T/C and Greek Cypriot (G/C) communities about clinical oncology and cancer genetics services and their applications in cancer intervention, prevention and early diagnosis. Partner(s) The Help Those With Cancer Association (HTWCA), the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF), and the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre (BOC).
Target group(s)
Target groups are (a) the T/C cancer patients and their families, who will benefit from increased access to clinical oncology and cancer genetics services, and decreased number of new cancer incidence in their families, and (b) the cancer care related professionals and civil society organizations (CSO's) from both communities who will join forces in the fight against cancer.
Final beneficiaries
The final beneficiaries are the general public from both communities.
Estimated results
Estimated results are: (a) increased access of T/C patients and their families to clinical oncology and cancer genetics services, and a concomitant decrease in the number of familial cancer cases observed in the T/C population, (b) increased public awareness in both communities about cancer genetics services and their applications for cancer intervention, prevention and early diagnosis, again contributing to the reduction of incidence of familial cancer cases, (c) increased dialogue, collaboration and reconciliation between the two communities initiated through a humanitarian perspective, and (d) strengthening and capacity building of CSO's from both communities.
Main activities
Organisation of bicommunal workshops/seminars and public awareness programs on clinical genetics services, provision of genetic testing and counseling, execution of case control studies, collection of epidemiological data, and dissemination of data to specialists and patients.
