Associate Scientist, Department of Cardiovascular Genetics and the Laboratory of Forensic Genetics
Assistant Professor
The Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics
Dr Bashiardes is involved in the research interests of the Department relating to cardiovascular genetics and forensic genetics. Her current main research focus in the field of cardiovascular research is on thoracic aortic aneurysms. Serum samples from patients with thoracic aortic aneurysms as well as excised aneurysmal tissue samples are being interrogated, through transcriptomic and proteomic analysis. Any unique patterns of vascular-derived molecules that are identified are further studied in the context of serving as sensitive and specific markers of thoracic aortic aneurysm development. In the forensic genetics context, she is undertaking phylogenetic studies related to the genetic ancestry of the Cypriot population through the analysis of lineage markers. She was a founding member of the Cyprus Society of Human Genetics in 2004 and has served as elected member of its board of directors.
Dr Evy Bashiardes holds a BSc degree in Genetics and a MPhil in Environmental Engineering and Genetics from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (UK). She was employed at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics in 1992. Since 1996 she has been a member of The Laboratory of Forensic Genetics and actively involved in establishing DNA-based typing methodologies to study evidence from civil, criminal, mass disaster and missing persons investigations. While working in the Laboratory of Forensic Genetics, she enrolled in a PhD program with Imperial College School of Medicine to pursue her developing interest in cardiovascular genetics. She successfully completed her thesis work and was awarded her Doctorate in 2005.
