The department has pioneered the work on cancer genetics in Cyprus with emphasis on the characterization of mutations in familial cancer predisposition syndromes. Our research interests include the epidemiology and molecular pathology of cancer, pharmacogenomics, cancer proteomics and the genetics of mitochondrial Myopathies.
Professor Kyriacos Kyriacou received his BSc degree in Biochemistry from the University of London in 1977 and his PhD from King’s College Medical School, in 1982 where he was also appointed as lecturer. Since 1991 he is working at CING as a Senior Scientist and Head of the Department of Electron Microscopy/Molecular Pathology. He is the founder of this department , which offers a centralized diagnostic ultrastructural service, as well as an extensive range of cancer genetic services, that diagnose cancer predisposition syndromes, as well identify actionable genetic targets for personalized medicine and oncogenetics. He is an internationally acclaimed expert on Electron Microscopy, as well as n Cancer Genetics. The department has graduated six PhDs and more than 20 MSc students.
Dr Kyriacou initiated the research into cancer genetics, with emphasis on characterizing mutations in predisposition genes in Cypriot families and is now leading one of the main teams in Cyprus, involved in cancer research. His main research interests include the genetic epidemiology and molecular pathology of cancer, ciliary disorders and cancer proteomics. He is the co-ordinator of several research grants and has obtained more than 8,000,000 euros in competitive funding and has authored more than 130 peer reviewed articles. He participates as a representative of Cyprus in several Societies and advisory Scientific committees in Europe. He was appointed by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation as the representative of Cyprus, in the EU-COST programme, in the BMBS (Biomedicine and Biomolecular Sciences) domain. He is an active member of the of the Electron Microscopy working group which is part of the European Society of Pathology. He serves as a reviewer/evaluator for several scientific journals and research funding bodies. He has organized several scientific conferences, both at National and International levels and has been invited to deliver many lectures both locally and abroad. His latest achievement is the Establishment of the Translational Facility at CING, which creates new important avenues for research on proteomics and on improving our understanding on the molecular mechanisms of many complex diseases like cancer.
