The Importance of Medical Genetics
Can you make a positive difference in the field of Medical Genetics? At the Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics (CING) we encourage our students to make a difference and a positive contribution to science and society. Advances in Medical Genetics are revolutionising the medical practice at every stage, from diagnosis to management, paving the way for a more informed medical approach to the entire spectrum of health conditions, from rare diseases to the most common.
Programme purpose and objectives:
Medical Genetics is becoming an increasingly important aspect in healthcare and has a major impact on the provision of more accurate clinical diagnoses, as well as enabling state-of-the-art therapeutic approaches that have already been introduced in-clinic in recent years. It is a major component of the vision towards personalised medicine and thus constitutes a highly attractive field of studies for the next generation of biomedicine professionals.
The Biomedical Research programme offers four stimulating compulsory courses on Molecular Genetics, Cytogenetics and Genomics, Biochemical Genetics, as well as Methodologies and Technologies Applied in Medical Genetics. A number of elective courses such as Bioinformatics, Molecular Basis of Monogenic Diseases, Molecular Basis of Complex Diseases, Gene and Cell Therapy, Neurosciences and Neurogenetics, Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience, Brain and Behaviour and Molecular Virology and Immunology are also available, enabling students to broaden their knowledge. Students also carry out a research or library project within the state-of-the-art Departments and Clinics of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics. The Institute conducts internationally renowned pioneering research work, therefore providing its postgraduate students with the knowledge and tools to complete a competitive and advanced research or library project.
Intended learning outcomes:
Upon completing this programme, MSc graduates will have acquired a detailed knowledge of the major medical genetics topics with emphasis on clinically relevant and translational aspects of genetic diseases. Our graduates may embark on a PhD programme and thus enter a research/academic career or join Clinical Laboratories offering genetic diagnostic services, the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare organisations and hospitals. Please contact us directly to find out more about the advantages and possibilities of advancing from the MSc Medical Genetics to the PhD in Medical Genetics.
