During a Press Conference organized by the Ministry of Health on 2 November 2009, the Minister, Dr Christos Patsalides announced the new National Prevention Program for Friedreich Ataxia. The program will be run on a pilot basis and will be implemented jointly by the CING and the Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health is funding the Program with the amount of €200.000.
The National Prevention Program for Ataxia refers to the prevention of a debilitating nervous system disease prevalent mostly in the Paphos district. Friedreich Ataxia is an inherited disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system with symptoms including ataxia, muscle weakness, speech problems and heart disease.
