Department of Cardiovascular Genetics and the Laboratory of Forensic Genetics

Services

The Laboratory of Forensic Genetics (LabFoG) of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) uses state of the art DNA‐based typing methodologies to study evidence from criminal, mass disaster and missing person’s investigations. In this context, it works in close collaboration with the Cyprus Police and other governmental authorities. Where necessary, expert‐witness testimony is provided, for the DNA findings, to the Cypriot Courts of Law. Kinship analysis is also offered to private customers. Throughout all the technical and administrative laboratory operations, strict quality assurance procedures are implemented to ensure quality and therefore validity of test results. Furthermore, current national personal data protection law and high ethical standards are followed to safeguard the rights and personal data of subjects involved in human identification procedures.

The LabFoG received its accreditation for the ISO 17025 Quality Assurance Standard in November 2013 and has since then expanded its scope of accredited methods in the field of forensic genetics. The LabFoG is also a Member of the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes DNA Working Group and undergoes external proficiency testing twice a year.

The Department of Cardiovascular Genetics of the CING provides genetic testing for familial hypercholesterolemia, thrombophilia, Alzheimer’s disease and mitochondrial Diabetes and Deafness.
