Research Interests

Neurology Centers in the Cyprus instirute of Neurology and genetics are referral center for neurological disease including neurodegenerative and neurogenetic. Research interest include clinical trials in neurogenetic and neurodegenerative disease including Huntington disease, cerebellar ataxias, spastic paraparesis, dystonias, Parkinson disease as well as atypical parkinsonism, Parkinson plus, epileptic syndroms and dementia. Special interest towards epidemiology and registry formation for cohort-based studies and precision medicine.


Yiolanda Christou is a consultant neurologist in the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics since 2009. She graduated from the Medical school of the Democritus University of Thrace. She gained specialty accreditation in Neurology from the Neurological department of Medical School of the Kapodistrian University in Athens in 2009. She has completed a MSc in Translational medicine in the University of Edinburg. The last ten years she has been working at the neurology department at The Cyprus Institute of neurology and Genetics. 
Her current position is a neurologist working on specialised clinics providing evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and follow up at the outpatient clinic but also for patients admitted in the ward. 
More specifically she take special interest in:
  • Neurodegenerative disease, which include PD, parkinsonism, movement disorders and dementia. She is an active member of the Cyprus HD association and a member of the EHDN clinical trial side in the CING as an accreditate rater and she perform the Botulinum toxin treatment clinic
  • Dementia through the CING dementia clinic.  she also participate at the national dementia committee, which is currently engaged in developing the Cyprus national strategic plan for dementia.
  • Epilepsy through the specialised epilepsy clinic with patient’ s follow up, medication monitoring and neurophysiology diagnosis. Recently she organised our center’ s application for affiliated member of the European reference network Epi-care and currently participates as an active member in Epi-care working groups.
