Neuropathology Department

Overview

The Neuropathology Department holds active roles in specialised diagnostic services, advanced education and translational research and its mission is to function as a tertiary service where patients with neurodegenerative conditions of both the peripheral and central nervous systems, can attend for assessment, diagnosis and long-term management. The Department’s key clinical areas of interest include neuromuscular diseases and neurogenetics, in which the Head of Department, Dr Menelaos Pipis, holds relevant clinical expertise. The cohorting of patients and observation of their diseases’ natural history over time leads to the generation of hypotheses which in turn also spurs our translational research. In the realm of central nervous system neurodegeneration, the Department’s pre-clinical research on Alzheimer’s disease, aims to provide a conceptual advance over the existing literature as it seeks to unravel the potential strong association between cognition and the metabolic syndrome. To complement this, the Department is also actively involved, and in some cases leads, clinical studies in cognitive performance, cognitive decline and dementia, in collaboration with our partners from the University of Cyprus, University of Nicosia and Frederick University.
